“70% of diseases are psychosomatic, meaning ‘stress’ related, causing acute or chronic conditions” - CNM
Write it down - Want to achieve something? Whatever ‘it’ is, make a note of what comes to mind, no matter how small. Don’t invalidate ‘creativity’ and that includes our thoughts big and small. Next to each, add a date with an action plan of how to tackle each goal. Break big goals down into bite size achievable steps. Then start with a small step that’s easy to do. Once successfully completed, move on to the second easiest step. Slowly building up to the more complex steps after the successful completion of the easiest ones first.
Improve your health - With what you eat. Swapping fast food and sugar laden ready meals for home cooked seasonal fresh produce can significantly reduce the risk of developing heart disease, certain cancers, cognitive decline and diabetes. Many people find in addition to eating more healthily, that cooking can be a very calming and mindful activity, helping to reduces stress at the end of a busy day and improve sleep quality. More great reasons to make healthy food swaps this year.
Improve your wellbeing - With regular movement. Recent research showed that walking at a moderate to fast pace can increase and extend our lifespan. Living longer, happier and healthier lives. Going outside to take a walk and breathing-in fresh air lifts the spirits, improves sluggish circulation, boosts the happy hormone ‘Serotonin’ while at the same time lowering ‘Cortisol’ the main stress hormone. Adding a 30 minute brisk walk several days a week also helps with weight loss. if you don’t want to walk try dancing, skipping, rebounding or swimming. Choose a form of movement you like. Something you enjoy and have fun doing. This will help motivate and encourage you to keep practicing it. Regular practice creates new healthy habits that can be enjoyed instead of hard work.
Help yourself - When you help others. Kindness towards others releases endorphins, hormones associated with pleasure. Oxytocin, (sometimes called the ‘love’ hormone) is shown to elevate mood. While Serotonin, (a neurotransmitter the brain uses to pass messengers of wellbeing to the rest of the body) produces a calming effect.
High Cortisol (associated with stress) is reduced when Oxytocin and Serotonin hormones are released. One study determined that ‘kind people’ have 23% less Cortisol than others. Therefore, acting out of kindness towards others, reduces stress and less stress leads to happiness. Because being charitable reduces stress, it promotes a healthy immune system. Studies have proven that immune system function is tied to our stress levels. if under a lot of stress, the immune system suffers. A weakened immune system makes for a susceptibility to illness and infection.
Helping others really can help us all to enjoy better health, physically and mentally. Secondary benefits associated with the release of Oxytocin and Serotonin, include:
Better weight control
Lower blood pressure
Less pain and depression
Helping others doesn’t have to take up lots of time, any time you spend helping others can have a significant positive impact on your health, others and the environment.
