The Wheel of Life
As a Health Coach I often use tools while working with people. Some examples of the different types of tools I use are:
Powerful Discovery Questions
An Inquiry or Journaling Prompt
A Sequence of Questions (that Walk Clients through a Learning Process)
Powerful Lists
A Visual or Get Clients to Draw
Reframing
Stories and Metaphor.
A favourite tool I often use with people is something called ‘The Wheel of Life’ (WOL). It’s both a visual aid and a practical tool.
The Wheel of Life is a powerful exercise to help people understand each aspect of their life and gain clarity on their goals. Are you feeling fulfilled in all areas of your life? Is your health, ok? Does your work make you happy? Are your relationships strong? Is your home environment comfortable? Are you achieving all your goals? If not, why? What is stopping you from making your dreams a reality? We can only create change in our lives if we first understand what the issues are. When we become clear about what we want, we’re able to take action and make things happen.
Why client’s like doing the Wheel of Life exercise?
The Wheel of Life empowers clients because it gives them an instant overview of their life – one that they can understand, analyse, and improve upon.
By showing them areas of their lives that they are doing well in as well others that need more work, the tool puts the reins of their lives in their own hands.
Moreover, the symbol of a wheel plays an important part in suggesting movement, balance, and the chance to steer one’s life in the correct direction. It appeals to clients on a subconscious level because of this symbolism.
How it works
Place a dot in each of the eight areas of your life (Personal Development, Health, Family, Career, etc) to mark how you feel about each one.
A dot placed nearer the centre of the circle indicates dissatisfaction in that particular part of your life.
A dot placed towards the outer edge of the circle indicates happiness and feeling fulfilled in that area.
How to see what your Wheel of Life looks like
When you have placed a dot on each of the lines, connect the dots to see your Wheel of Life.
Are there areas where your Wheel is flat? Are these areas calling to be NOURISHED? How So?
How does your Wheel of Life compare?
What does your Wheel of Life look like? Is it completely round? A little jagged? Or all over the place? Which areas of your life make you feel most fulfilled? What parts do you need to work on to be truly happy? The rounder and wider your wheel, the happier and healthier you are. If your wheel is uneven and out of shape, it shows there are the areas that you may need to work on to create balance and happiness in your life. Start making positive changes so you can start to live your dream life.
